Discussion: National Day Observations

It’s not a holiday or observance here, but today is the 60th anniversary of the US Supreme Court decision in Miranda v Arizona. It was the decision that established the legal requirement for police to inform someone they are arresting of their legal rights in the situation. Such as the right to the presence of an attorney, and the right to keep silent.

“Read him his rights” has become a pop culture substitute for “place him under arrest”.

We watch a number of police procedural TV shows which I generally enjoy. But they all seem to frequently rely on suspects making confessions without a lawyer presence. If our teenage daughter is watching with us, I always remind her that if she ever finds herself in any kind of negative interaction with the police, the only thing she should say is “I’d like an attorney present.”

Trump this morning - don't believe the people who told you he had a peace deal with Iran. Quote: "Very dishonorable people to deal with. With them, there is no such thing as dealing in good faith. AMAZING!"

No one would know more about being "dishonorable", "not dealing in good faith" and "pathetic" than Donald J Trump.

My friend the Crow, stops by regularly for a cat food snack. As I read about their fondness for shiny objects I tried leaving a key near the dish. So far no interest so I'm looking for something shiny yet safe for him to carry off.

Try wrapping the key in some aluminium foil.

Are there any nearby hardware stores where you can cadge a small sample of a mirror tile to try.  Also, see if there are any glass cutting or mirror stores in the area where you might be able to relieve them of a small piece of suitably-blunted-edge mirror.  (Tell them you are working on a mosaic and one small sample is all you need.)

someone should explain to me why religious beliefs, regardless of how asinine they might be, (and no. they're not all asinine) must always deserve respect and deference.

Thank goodness asinine beliefs are confined to religion, and we never have to deal with them in any other venue.

Discussion: Summer Weather Thread

...HEAT ADVISORY NOW IN EFFECT FROM NOON THURSDAY TO 8 PM EDT
FRIDAY...

* WHAT...Heat index values up to near 100 expected.

* WHERE...Portions of northeast New Jersey and southeast New York.

* WHEN...From noon Thursday to 8 PM EDT Friday.

* IMPACTS...Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat
  illnesses.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Heat Advisory is issued when the combination of heat and humidity
is expected to make it feel like it is 95 to 99 degrees for two or
more consecutive days, or 100 to 104 degrees for any length of time.

Seniors and those with chronic health problems or mental health
conditions are at an increased risk. Homes without air conditioning
can be much hotter than outdoor temperatures.

Use air conditioning to stay cool at home or go to a place that has
air conditioning. If you don`t have home air conditioning, continue
to seek out cool spaces each day as long as it remains hot, and for
a few days after if your home is still hot. Check on vulnerable
friends, family members and neighbors.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and
Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in
shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat
should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an
emergency! In cases of heat stroke call 9 1 1.

I thought it was due to a lack of cleaning. It's nice to be able to look out the window so get on with it NJT.

And practical. Sometimes, when announcements aren’t made and the signs at the ends of the car aren’t flashing the stops, the cloudy windows make it impossible for me to tell which station we’re at. I pity the casual riders who don’t know instinctively where to get off and who could really use some cues.
